2002 Mini Cooper Transmission What is wrong with my car?
Hi.I bought a 2002 mini cooper about 2 years ago.Last week when was driving it wouldn't shift out of first gear,the coolant gauge went from cold to hot and back to cold,the tachometer stopped working and the gas gauge went from half to empty back to half.It has a cvt automatic transmission.Is this a computer problem,trans problem or something else?Thanks guys.
Your car has a "limp home" mode, when it detects errors it locks the transmission so you can't get going too fast and really damage something. This was likely set by the other malfunction.
For your gauges to all go haywire like that, I suspect an electrical problem, likely a loose or corroded ground strap. The ECU and gauge cluster both ground through the chassis, so chassis ground is what I would check first. Probably not the engine ground or the main battery ground, if either of those failed your spark plugs wouldn't fire and the engine would shut off.
It is also possible that a problem with the ECU itself (a broken solder join or a broken board), or the wiring to the ECU (water or corrosion inside a plug connector, or a broken wire), could cause the gauges to freak out. Get your codes scanned (a free service at most auto parts retailers) and that can help you narrow down the search for faulty wiring.

i *just purchased a dying car unknowingly, can i take legal action against a private car dealer?
recently, my husband and i bought a 2002 automatic mini cooper. we were very pleased to purchase it at a good price. the car's transmission went out just a little over a month after buying the car!! the mechanic said this is something that had been going on for a long time, the previous owners must have known. can or should we take legal action?what should we do? we have proof of purchase.
*also, a new transmission and labor racks us at about $7,000- almost exactly what we paid for the whole car!
*the seller informed us that prior to selling the car, he had it checked by a michanic that supposedly said the car was in fine shape; contrary to what was told to us the michanic informed us it was prolonged damage
No. Unless they specifically warranted the transmission, all car sales are AS IS. Also, if your mechanic said it was "something that had been going on for a long time", then it is something that would have been found by a mechanic BEFORE you bought it if you had had one look at it and done your due diligence. But, bottom line is. Without a written warranty, it's AS IS and you're out of luck.
And for the people yelling "lemon law", that only applies to a NEW car. Not a used car.
