Does VVT-i engine along double overhead camshift make a car faster? I have a Yaris hatchback 2007 and I hear different things about it. I go to different websites and I compare it with different cars and I see different ratings on different websites. The Engine is VVT-i 1.5L,16 valve,DOHC and the compression ratio is 10.5. It has a very fast acceleration. So far I 've beaten Scion, Toyota Prius, Mini cooper(very unexpeceted) and few others. It's weight is 2300 lbs. Is it the combination of every thing that makes it very quick? Please provide me with some info.

as others have said, VVT-i stands for Variable Valve Timing with intelligence. This system eliminates the gas line cable and turns the gas pedal into an accelerator pedal. This means when you stomp on the accelerator pedal, you are telling the main computer to hold open the air valves longer, pulling in more air to burn. Gas as a liquid does not burn well being dumped into a cylinder. The air intake valves are combined with a sixteen pinhole fuel injector/sprayer on each cylinder to produce an extremely fine gas mist/air mixture to give you a more explosive, more complete burn. To top it all off, each cylinder has it's own computer control to advance or retard the spark entering the chamber, so each cylinder can fire in a different way, if needed, from the others (water in the gas, etc).
VVT-i in combination with a double overhead, counter-roatating camshaft is done to produce as smooth an engine as possible. The smoother an engine runs, the less friction it produces, which means it works less to reach higher rpms. Check out the tach next time and see how low the rpms sit when at idle (about 1000 or less) and see how little the steering wheel shimmies from the lack of engine vibration.
You didn't specify which Scion you've beaten, and I'm going to guess the Xa or the Xb. Both of those, unmodified, use the same 1.5 liter 4 cylinder VVT-i engine. Both vehicles are set up for economy, not acceleration, with the base engine. You should be able to beat them. The Xa is the old Echo with a different body style and uses the same engine. The Yaris uses an updated, modified 4 cyl and has electric steering, so no steering pump drag on the engine, like the Echo/Xa.
You also said you beat a Prius, not surprising, considering the Prius is a mid-size car being driven for the sake of gas mileage, not speed (the Yaris is a sub-compact). Also, the Yaris has a 0-60 time of 9.3 seconds (according to Consumer Reports) and the Prius has a 0-60 time of 10.5 seconds. Not a blistering amount of difference, but 1.2 seconds is about a full car length at 60 mpg.
The Mini has a 0-60 time of 8.4 seconds, the Mini S is down to 7.5 seconds (edmunds.com) and both would beat the Yaris by at least a full car length, so the Mini driver must not have wanted to race.
Part of it is the light weight, part of it is the response of the other drivers, and part of it is the condition of the vehicles themselves. Sounds like you really enjoy your Yaris.
