Car Never Titled

car title signed but never transferred?

I'm buying a car from someone, they bought the car in Texas signed the title and brought the car to Alabama. They never tagged the car or had the title transferred. Are they going to have to get the title in their name before I get the car or is there a way to work it out to where I can get it transferred directly to me?

Yes, if you are interested in the car, tell the seller you will buy it as soon as they have the title in their name. It is illegal to jump title unless you are a dealer with tax stamps to pay the state their due.

If you buy it in a name which isn't the person selling it, the seller gets out of the fees and passes them to you.

If they refuse, walk away from the deal.

How can I get the title to my car in Tenn?

I purchased a car from Rogers Used Cars in Memphis. He never gave me a title only a Bill of Sale. He said it would be coming in a few days. That was in January, He never had the car titled to him. I need to register it. I don't know who owned the car before Rogers.
I got the part about leaving the lot without a title. It's done. Thanx.

I am from Tennessee and have had some mishaps with titles over the years. The best advice that I can give you is to read the below listing straight from Tennessee.gov. It give the procedures for getting a title without registering the vehicle in Tennessee. I first would see if your state would accept a bill of sale to register the vehicle, if not read the listing below and write the address. I would call Rogers Used Cars and tell him that you want your title and if he does not, then report him to the Better Business Beureau for poor business practice.

Title Only

T.C.A. 55-3-101 (a) Indicates every motor vehicle or motorized bicycle, as defined in chapter 8 of this title, and every trailer, semi trailer, and pole trailer as defined by § 55-1-105, when driven or moved upon a highway, and every mobile home or house trailer when occupied shall be subject to the registration and certificate of title provisions of chapters 1-6 of this title, except as indicated in T.C.A. 55-3-101 (1) through 55-3-101 (4).

However, there are certain instances when a Title Only is applicable:

Out-of-state Repossession.
Insurance company settlement.
Dealership selling vehicle out of state (must be accompanied with name and address of out-of-state resident along with letter from out-of-state DMV advising they will not accept our documentation if applicable).
The owner of a mobile home.
Non-profit organization, examples: American Red Cross, American Cancer Society, Salvation Army, Churches, etc.
