Classic Mini Cooper Tuning classic mini buying advice?
I realise classic minis need work and can be a battle against rust etc but I am eager to learn a bit more and get a little bit more hands on with cars, so i was thinking about runing a classic mini, probably with the intention of tuning the engine (swin su's), and probably minor interior refinements.
Id like to know 2 things.
Firstly most minis have rust, I realise you can buy repair panels and i have access to a bloke with a welder =) but i was wondering where are the nightmare, and quick fix areas of rust. e.g presumably wings and doors being bolt on aint too bad?
also i notice the cooper s engine is 1.3l, i notice there are none cooper models also with engines this size. if your planning on upping the carbs (possibly with the need to uprate the head?) is there any benefit to the cooper engine over the mayfair?
one problem with minis is the subframes. they also don't like road humps, they knackr the steering joints/trackrods. another problem is that the battery is in the boot, a long way from the starter motor, if the battery is even slightly down, it won't start.
the early MG Metro is a much better car.
the problem I have with driving a mini is that the screen is so low I can't see when a traffic light has changed, and I am only 5ft9.
