Convertible Immaculate At what point in time does a vehicle become a "collectable" and begin to appreciate in value?
I have a 16 year old Jaguar convertible with a 12 cyl engine. It is British Racing green with a saddle tan leather interior. I have had it since 1999. It is immaculate and all service records are available since new at the local Jaguar dealership. The car is not driven except for scheduled service and it has less that 30K original documented miles. I'm not really interested in selling but if it will never begin to appreciate, there is no point in keeping it.
Generally the criteria for a vehicle to have collectability varies as greatly as the cars. However, I'd have to say look back in time for the answer. Point of interest: Packards of the 20 & 30's. Now granted your Jag is no Packard, but there are some limited parallels. Firstly, both vehicles were very expensive new. Secondly, they fell out of favor as gas prices rose and the cars aged. At one point in the Packard's history they were considered to be just an old used land yacht not worth much. Then along about the 30 year old mark there was renewed interest and collector's started touting their beauty. The Jag XJS granted was mass produced from '76 to '96 without much change. Although, very few of the early models have survived in tact in excellent condition. The fact that the XJS doesn't have a great survival rate and was really not produced in great quantities even though it was produced for a number of years truly lends to the collectibility of the car. 12 cyl. engines of any make are desirable. I truly am convinced that in the next 10-15 years we'll see a huge spike in the prices of these vehicles. Right now they are just at the bottom point of their prices. Give it like I said 10-15 years and I think you'll be glad you did. Just look at what an XKE 12cyl goes for today! I'm the proud owner of a 1990 XJS Classic Collection edition in silver blue with magnolia leather piped in navy blue. It has 83k miles and has been garage kept its entire life. I'm the second owner and it is as near to mint condition as one with those miles and age can be. Don't give up on the collectibility of it just yet. Most all of the true collectibles fall out of favor with the general public for a period of time before they are praised. With gas selling for over $3 a gallon and all of the V12's being swapped out for Chevy 350's it just makes it all the more rare for someone to own one. Good luck and enjoy that Jag. Is the Jaguar XJS convertible (1995 model) a good car for a weekend driver?
Car has 50K on new engine, immaculate body and paint, clean interior, all options, 110K miles, one owner, all service records. Is this car comfortable, stylish to most, fun to drive, and dependable for a weekend cruiser? I have never driven one before. Thanks for your advice.
You should also consider that such a car may be expensive to insure. Check your insurance rates before buying one, for example here - autoinsurance.maclenet.com
