I'm looking to buy a vintage beetle- what should i watch out for, look for and beware of when buying?

I've been wanting a vintage beetle for a long while now. My dream would be a 1967 convertible. That would be at the top of my want list, but I would happily settle for a one that was '67 or earlier, convertible, rag top or hard top- doesn't matter. I dig them all.

What sort of things should I be on the look out for? I've done some homework and even bought, and read, "How to keep your Volkswagen alive" by John Muir, but I would like to hear from those folks who work on, drive and love their vintage beetles for advice.

I think you have started off the right way by getting John Muirs book.

In my humble opinion, the mechanical parts of a Beetle are reasonable freely available and easy to repair. What is not that easy to repair is rust, particularly in areas such as the bottom of the pillar by the door hinges. Look for signs that the rust has been covered up, particularly at sides of roof, back window, etc. Watchout for Beetles where they have removed the rubber welt between the fenders and the body and smoothed it off with Bondo. Generally if I see this I stay well away. Other areas to look are in the vicinity of the heater channels.

Some panels of a Beetle are easily replaceable (if you have a MIG welder and can put down a reasonable weld). Look at sites on the internet such as for more info on this
