Cooper Manual Transmission
Does rolling in neutral down hill damage your manual transmission?
I have a mini cooper with a manual transmission. I'm able to roll in neutral 20% of the drive to work and 50% off the drive coming home. Recently I've read that this might damage the transmission but no reference was made about the type of car or if they were talking about a automatic or manual transmission.
Absolutely not. It won't hurt an automatic either. What most people aren't aware of is that resting your hand on a shifter can be hard on a manual transmission.
This is because when you complete the shift, the "synchros" that allow you to complete the shift smoothly are in a rested position. When you rest your hand on the shifter it puts a strain on the fork against the synchros and also puts some strain against the synchro and the gear.
This is also true of resting your foot on the clutch pedal. Resist the temptation to do that. It puts constant strain between the release bearing and pressure plate.

How does the mini cooper automatic compare to the manual transmission feel? and performance?
Both transmission performs well.
The difference is when you want to pick fast,the manual will respond fast,the auto takes a little slower.
manual consumes less and auto comsumes slightly higher.
Otherwise,cruising is same.
It all depends on individuals,what they prefer.
