High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles The National Helium Reserve, also known as the Federal Helium Reserve, is a strategic reserve of the United States holding over a billion cubic feet of helium gas. The helium is stored at the Cliffside Storage Facility about 12 miles (19 km) northwest of Amarillo, Texas in a natural geologic gas storage formation. The reserve was established in 1925 as a strategic supply of gas for airships, and in the 1950s became an important source of coolant during the Space Race and Cold War. The facilities were located to be close to the Hugoton and other natural gas fields in southwest Kansas and the panhandles of Texas and Oklahoma. The natural gas in these fields contains unusually high percentages of helium, from 0.3 to 2.7, and constitute the largest source of helium in the United States. The helium is separated as a byproduct from the produced natural gas. Author: Surhone, Lambert M./ Timpledon, Miriam T./ Marseken, Susan F. Which days do you drill in the USMC Reserve and is it feasible to commute 900 miles to drill every month?
I am interested in joining the USMC Reserve. I read on the Marine Corps Reserve website that drill was two days a week. I was wondering if that was Friday Saturday or Saturday Sunday or if it depends on the unit. I was also wondering whether or not you are required to report the day/night before those two days or if you can arrive that morning.
I am interested in joining the 4th Marine Recon Battalion, but the nearest company is almost 900 miles from where I will most likely be going to school (Santa Barbara, CA). Do you thing its feasible (or even allowed) for me to fly or drive that far twice a month?
Thank you everybody for your great responses. The unit in Albuquerque was the one I had in mind. The more I think about it, the more I realize that it would not be a good idea to go down that 900 mile road. I will have to think about my options. I do plan to go active duty, but I wanted to be in the reserve until I get out of college. Now I'm rambling...thank you everyone.
The amount of days depends on the unit. Usually it is saturday and sunday only, but frequently friday also. For FXs (field exercises) they may want to do a thursday-sunday thing. Don't forget the AT for two weeks per year either! I would not travel 900 miles unless it is a temporary thing and you plan on moving closer. Frequently you will be so exhausted from drill you will either be risking your life on the road or have to add another night to rest up for the drive/flight. They will give you billeting (a place to stay, usually a motel) for drill, but I don't believe they compensate you for gas/tickets. I commuted 70 miles each way and did not get any compensation. You will normally make around 200-300 dollars per drill (depends on how long it is/your rank), and your travel would almost certainly exceed that. If you have your heart set on that unit or just the Marine Corps in general, go active duty. Trust me.
