Girls Just Want to Have Fun – Camping

Introduce girls to the great outdoors.  What a fantastic way to teach girls about nature, building self-confidence, discovering ones independence, working together with others, learning to cook, building a fire while exploring the out-of-doors.  Moreover, the importance of finding the resources to either organizes your own girls' camp outing or looking for a camp that provides the tools teaching outdoor skills.  Whatever your means the foundation laid and the value of the experience will last a lifetime. 

In addition, helping to plan and carry out a successful trip results in a lot of growing up.  The girls learn to anticipate and plan ahead as they create checklists to use for packing.  They must work and cooperate closely with others, accepting responsibility for setting up camp as well as other important related camp tasks.  Also, the vigorous activity planned and the nutritious meals prepared promote exuberant good health and fitness. 

Of course, finding the right resources can be helpful in the planning process.  Your local Girl Scouts, Campfire Girls, Four–H Clubs, or even your local YWCAs are wonderful places to inquire information on camping.  Start small steps of providing camping experiences right out your own backyard.  For example, teaching the girls to set up tents and prepare the tent for sleeping.  Next prepare a meal over a camp stove and assign jobs to cooking, preparing food and to clean-up afterwards.  Another example, instruct how to build a campfire, safety around the fire, and for fun roast something over the fire.  Thus, providing the mini lessons prior to the main camping trip. 

Similarly, other points to consider in planning are where to go, how to get there, what to take, and how long to stay which may depend upon such factors as:

1. The ages of girls and experience of those going.
2. The temperature and probable weather conditions they may encounter.
3. What means of transportation used- car, canoe, foot, bicycle or horseback
4. How to come by more food either packing enough or picking up along the way.
5. How rugged the camping – state or national parks, secluded or not secluded areas.
6. What is the availability of safe water for drinking, cooking, and cleanliness?  Will you need to purify it?
7. The number and length of stopovers you want to make to take side trips.
8. Do some areas require you to have permits for camping, build fires or fish?
9. Are there places convenient to contact parents, a physician or ranger in case of emergency? 
10. The amount of time you want to devote to cooking and the type of cooking utensils you have available. 

All in all, make the trip theirs and not yours, so that they have the joy of helping to make decisions, problem solve which enables ownership and builds success.  Plant the seed and watch them grow by teaching them the necessary camping skills to enjoy each other's company, working together, opportunity for exploring, and just plain having fun.
