14 years ago I bought an old Volkswagen, a 1971 Super Beetle convertible and drove it home. The only thing that looked good on the car was the paint job, the interior and engine was in rough shape. I didn't know much about Volkswagens, or any car for that matter, but something was different about this car. At the time I thought even if I have to put a few hundred dollars into repairs it was worth it because the car would be paid for.
The thing I didn't realize about that day was that it would change my life. I thought I bought an old beat up VW Super beetle. What I got was something much more interesting and even rewarding. I became a part of a community. During that drive home nearly every VW driver I encountered greeted me with a wave and a smile. It would only take a few more days for me to realize this was something special. Let's face it, you don't see Mini Cooper drivers waving to each other.
In fact, the VW wave is only the beginning. I would soon learn about picnics, shows, and lots of other events focused on VW owners. There are clubs all over the country and on the Internet. The VW enthusiast community is unified in its love for their cars and it's not exclusive. This club called VW owners, isn't something that requires a massive amount of cash or an expensive car. Not many could afford to get a Jaguar, let alone participate in that community.
So what makes this community so great? Unity of a common spirit. Nowhere else do you find so many people so eager to talk about and work on a car. Dubber communities offer help in repairs, rides, dinner and drinks, camping and more. While broke down on the side of the road another VW owner pulled over to help and not only got me way, but also offered to help me with some body work I needed to have done as well.
People like to link the VW with the hippie image and I suppose in some ways it's accurate, but I think it's even greater than that. It's truly a community of people who enjoy their cars. It's a group that anyone can be a part of.
