I just bought an 03 Mini Cooper and its making a weird noise. After I start the engine, about 3-4 seconds later it sounds like a second motor comes on, or a really loud fan. I can feel the vibrations in the steering wheel and on the dash. My friend said it was just a fan that was coming on and that all Mini's have fans like that. Is this true? I can also feel it kick on while i'm driving, but obviously I notice it more when im sitting still. If I am idling, once it turns on i have yet to feel it turn off until i start going. If it comes on while im driving, it will stay on for 30-45 seconds and then i can feel it turn off. Any thoughts?
It sounds like you have a leaking thermostat. This is normal on these. If your low on coolant then your fans will come on really quick. I work on minis (@ a BMW dealer) and I see this a lot. You should take it to your mini dealer. Good luck. They will prob. charge you about 2 hrs. for the job and then the price of the part and $20 for coolant. Hope I have been some help.

mini cooper - engine noise when car is switched off?
I have a '05 mini cooper automatic which works fine - but when I finish a journey and switch the car off - the engine makes a loud noise almost like a plane trying to take off !!
i guess it may be something to do with the engine cooling down but if anyone can verify that i would appreciate it.
also - the heating system confuses me a bit ( there are a lot of buttons on this dashboard if you havent seen one before)
I set the temp as high eg 28c and hit the '+' button to activate the fan - but even after 10 mins - when i put my hand above the dashboard I can still feel cold air - any ideas ?

Chances are the Plane-taking off is a Thermostat Control for the Radiator-its somehow-still in a circuit with the Ignition Switch--turned to OFF..its your Cooling Fan(which is electric)..still running(why)..??
..
Heater Controls are always confusing..you most likely have a FRESH-air Intake(port)..that works alongside of the Heater Core..and how do you know that the Identifying MARKS on the Control Knob are correct/??/could you need a Control Knob adjustment in the CABLE.
