Mini Cooper Gearbox Noise

03 Mini cooper gearbox problem?

Hello
recently my mini has started making a weird noise only when your in gear and moving and it sounds like something vibrating, its making a horibble Vrrrrrrrr sound but when you put it in neutral no sound, i took it to mini and they have said it needs a new gearbox (which will cost in excess of £2500) however the guys there have said this shouldnt be and are going to consult BMW about it. its only 6 years old, been well driven, serviced by Mini only and only done around 65,000 miles.. but i am expecting a big no no from BMW...

However i have read that there are some gearbox problems with minis, could somone tell me what faults there are and what minis are affected beacuse if BMW decided not to help out whatsoever i would like to have some backup information to help me fight it

I do not know of any recalls for Mini gearboxes. And chances are that you caused the problem yourself by wrong downshifts and/or over-revs. Although of course manual gearboxes (of any brand) are not infallible. My advice is not to get into a confrontational stance at this point.
Try being nice first. Call BMW/Mini corporate customer relations and explain your problem nicely. Tell them that you are a loyal BMW/Mini
customer and that you drive properly and have the car serviced only by Mini dealers. Since it is already past warranty ask them if they could goodwill warranty the repairs. Usually they would either shoulder everything, or share with the costs (like you pay for labor and they pay for parts).
Or you can just go ahead and sue them if you want.
