fun to drive fast car?
im going to be needing a car next june and i was wondering what kind of car i should get. i only want to spend around 5-7 thousand on a new car and i would really like to get a gti, or a mini cooper, i like the hatchback styling. what other cars are there, that have similar performance like these cars?
PLease no nissan models/old stuff like the 240sx 3000GT, etc.

You can't get many newer cars for 5-7 grand. At least the ones you're aiming for. The GTI is probably your best bet but prepare for a lot of maintenance to keep it that way. There's a lot of little things on that car that turn into huge problems. Many of the parts and fluids have to be OEM or you'll risk ruining the car. The oil has to be 5W-30/40 full synthetic. The coolant has to be G12 red/pink coolant. You use any other kind, your aluminum heads will turn to sand. If you mix red with any regular coolant such as yellow, it'll turn into a brown goo inside your system and that'll be a big problem. Even something as simple as power steering fluid is special.
Then there are a lot of the typical problems with the VW's. Such as overheating (thermostat, aux fan, water pump failure), timing belt changes are a HUGE thing to keep on top of. The windows have been known to fall into the door randomly, door lock problems, cheap plastic in the interior tends to chip away...
If you don't mind spending a little extra then get the GTI. It is a great car if you don't neglect it. The thermostat, aux fan, and water pump can cost a lot of money if you take it to a mechanic. The engine compartment is crammed. There's hardly any room for anything. So make sure you are willing to look online for DIY instructions if you want to save money.
Example: My thermostat failed and the shops wanted $230 for parts, labor and coolant. I went to Autozone, bought a thermostat, bought coolant and did it myself. $25.
