What is a premium paint package option?

Some car makers offer certain colors that cost extra. Can someone tell me what goes into this particular type of paint job that makes it cost more?

However, if you don't know the answer, please be so kind as to spare me the wisecracks. That's not what I'm looking for.

Usually, a premium paint package involves special details like pinstripes or 2-tone paint. For example, my wife has a 2004 Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer with a premium paint job -- dark blue with a tan-colored trim. Since it's easier to just paint a car one color and be done with it, car companies charge extra for the "special" paint jobs. Does that help?
