mini cooper steering wheel going stiff after a few miles?

every time I turn the engine on (after being parked for a few hours) the steering wheel is easy to turn but it goes stiff after about 2 miles of driving it and by the time I get to my destination is very hard to maneuver to park. Any advice? It's a 2004 mini.

This car is not power steering and doesn't have a steering whell fluid tank.

Well, you do have power steering. It's electrical and all Mini's have it from 2002 onwards.

Sounds like you're having a problem with the electric steering boost motor.
